Sultan Hassan School (dates and numbers)
The establishment of this great school was ordered by Sultan Al-Nasir Hassan bin Al-Sultan Al-Nasir Muhammad bin Al-Sultan Al-Mansur Qalawun, he is Sultan Ibn Al-Sultan Ibn Al-Sultan, in 757 AH / 1356 AD.
It was built in two palaces for two princes from his father, Al-Nasir Muhammad, namely Prince Al-Tanbagha Al-Mardani, and Prince Yalbugha Al-Yahawi.
The total area of ​​the school is 9706 square meters.
The duration of construction is 3 years, during which no work has been invalidated.

Its most important facade is the northern facade that bears the entrance block. The northern facade is 145 meters long.
The entrance block (school gate) is 37 meters high and 20 meters wide.
School’s door
The door of the school is wooden, armoured with copper. It was made in 764 AH, according to which “He ordered the construction of this blessed door, the poor servant of God Almighty, our Master, the Sultan, the Martyr Abu Al-Ma’ali Al-Nasir Hassan bin Maulana, the Sultan, the Martyr Al-Nasir Muhammad in the year seven hundred and sixty-four.” Al-Mu’ayyad Sheikh bought this door and transferred it to A mosque in al-Ghouriya next to Bab Zuweila, in 819 AH, and he bought a copper tandoor with him and the price was 500 dinars.
A tragic accident, a construction failure
In the year 762 AH, the workers were building the third minaret above the entrance, it fell, and under it 600 orphans, only 6 of them survived.
east facade
It is 68 meters long and has the facade of the burial dome facing the castle.
The two minarets on the eastern facade of the southern qibla iwan are the oldest, 81 and a half meters long, from the courtyard floor to the top.
The northern minaret was restored during the reign of Ibrahim Pasha in 1082 AH / 1671 AD, and it fell in 1070 AH.
school bowl
We access it through a refracted entrance, a rectangular space, exposed cyan, 34 x 30 metres, with a flat area of ​​1100 square metres.
School Iwans
The iwan, which is the closed space on three sides and opens on one side, overlooks the courtyard, and you cannot pass from one iwan to another except through the courtyard.
The Iwans of the Sultan Hassan School are knotted, without columns, the largest of which is the eastern iwan, the “qibla” iwan, its depth is 32 and a half meters.
burial dome
Its height is 48 meters, and the construction hour was a wooden Samarkand dome armoured with lead, like the Shafi’i dome. It fell in 1071 AH, and Ibrahim Pasha renewed it in 1082 AH in the Dome of Al-Ashraf Khalil bin Qalawun.

Sultan’s assassination
Sultan Hassan was assassinated in 762 AH, so the work in the school stopped. Bashir Agha Al-Jamdar completed the works, including the floor of the courtyard, the marble door skirts, the doors of the main school door, and other works, including the dome above the fountain in the middle of the school courtyard, which bore the date of 766 AH.
