The King of France is a prisoner in the house of judge Ibn Luqman in Mansoura.
After defeating the Crusaders in 6 campaigns, Louis IX aspired to take control of Jerusalem and said (Jerusalem will not fall unless Egypt falls), so he prepared a huge campaign of nearly 50 thousand soldiers who gathered them in Cyprus and headed to Egypt first, which was the main obstacle in front of him to seize Jerusalem. Egypt at that time, the good king Najm al-Din Ayoub in the Levant and his son Prince Turan Shah. The news of the invasion reached the king, so he decided to return to the country, but he died on his return. And his wife, the queen al-Durr, hid the news from his soldiers until the return of his son, Turan Shah, so as not to frustrate them and withdraw from the front of the two crosses.
Meanwhile, the French continued to advance to Mansoura after seizing the port of Damietta, north of Egypt.
And they were defeated by a heavy defeat in a town between Mansoura and Damietta called Faraskur in the Battle of the Small Sea, and nearly thirty thousand crusaders were killed during the battle.
Among the dead was King Louis IX’s brother, Robert, Count of Artois.
The French king decided to gather his forces again and gradually withdraw to the north in light of these successive defeats. The Egyptian forces pursued him and surrounded him in a town north of Mansoura called Mit Al-Khouli Abdullah.
The Egyptians captured him there and took him humiliated to Mansoura. There they deposited him in the house of Judge Fakhr Al-Din Ibn Luqman, the judge of the judges, where he and two of his army commanders were shackled. He was not released until after the French abandoned Damietta and paid 10 million francs as a ransom for his release.
And Louis IX returned in 647 AH. 1249 AD brings shame and disgrace to Europe after its defeat at the hands of the Egyptian Muslim forces, which were fighting for the sake of the Islamic faith and nothing else. This campaign was the last organized campaign in the history of the Islamic Crusades.
