Reign of King Khufu 4th Dynasty The Nile was the main way of travelling. Boats were important for this. the Egyptians saw the Gods as also sailing the celestial Nile. Re the sun god travelled through the night in a boat to be reborn in the morning. The Pharoah, in his afterlife, also expected to join the Sun god in his daily journey. This boat made of cedar wood from Lebanon is one of five belonging to the Pharoah Khufu buried in pits around his pyramid. It took 10 years to restore it. Khufu’s boat is housed in a special enclosure. In the other four pits, three are empty. One has a boat within it. The function of this craft is not certain. It could have been a solar boat to travel with the sun god Re. It may have been used as a state barge or to bring Khufu s body from Memphis to his pyramid for burial.
