Egyptian-German mission, headed by Dr Horig Sorosian, discovered a huge statue of the deity Horus, during the archaeological excavations of the mission inside the remains of the Column Hall in the “Millions of Years” temple of King Amenhotep III, in Kom El-Hattan, on the western mainland in Luxor.
“Fathy Yassin,” Director General of Antiquities in West Luxor, said in a statement today, Thursday, that the discovered statue is made of black granite and is 1.58 meters long. It depicts the idol Horus in the form of a falcon, standing wearing a kilt without legs and broken arms.
Dr Horig Sorouzian, head of the mission, said that this discovery comes within the framework of the project to restore the statue of “Memnon” and the temple of the king “Amenhotep III”, which began in 1998, under the supervision of the Ministry of Antiquities and the German Institute of Archeology, to preserve the remains of the temple and restore Build it again.
She emphasized that the discovered statue is in good preservation and is an important artistic, scientific and archaeological value. It will provide the complete picture of the temple, especially after its collapse due to a devastating earthquake in the twenty-eighth century BC.
She explained that the stones were used to build temples and other royal statues in the Ramesside era, noting that the statue is currently undergoing restoration. The mission will continue to excavate to search for the statue’s legs, especially since busts, heads of some gods were also discovered.
