The Cemetery of Serapeum at Saqqara Cairo, Egypt, was discovered by Auguste Maret of France in 1850
The Serapeum catacombs are a confusing puzzle that indicates the scientific progress of the Egyptian civilization.
It is one of the most important tombs built in Memphis
It has carved corridors in the ground for a distance of 380 meters at a depth of 17 meters below the surface of the Saqqara plateau, from which side rooms are branched with 24 large, well-made coffins that are considered a scientific and engineering miracle even today.
The average weight of the coffin is about 85 tons
Its establishment dates back to King Amenhotep the Third (1390_1352 BC), the Eighteenth Dynasty, and the Late Period
Prince Khamwas, son of King Ramses II (nineteenth dynasty), dug a tunnel in a mountain carved on its sides by niches
King Ipsmatic I (the Twenty-sixth Dynasty) built a second tunnel of 350 meters long, 5 meters high, and 3 meters wide, which the Ptolemies later used.
It is said that these coffins were made for the Apis calf, but they were empty. No coffins were found in any of them on the calf, as claimed by the French Mariette Auguste, who discovered the cemetery. Although he used dynamite to open the coffins, he discovered amulets, ornaments, and carved and coloured plates known as the Serapeum plates that travelled to France in The Wafers Museum.
Despite the large size of the coffins, they are located in narrow and dark tunnels dug in the heart of Saqqara Rocks. The tunnels of the Serapeum have only one door. The entrance and exit are considered. The vision inside the tunnels, even when the sun is very dark,
How were these tunnels dug?
There are no traces of torch places on the tunnel walls.
Coffins are all made of high hard rock (red granite – black granite – basalt – schist – quartz) are not all the same body and have different designs, and covers in different shapes, and another with a cover that has two holes opposite the rest. King Farouk tried to get one of the coffins out of the tunnel and used a lot of workers, horses, and mules, and he was only able to move him from his place except for a few meters and left him in his place so far.
